The Surya Rashi
Your Vedic Sun Sign — Surya Rashi — is determined by the Sun's sidereal position at your birth, calculated against the fixed star positions. The Sun in Vedic astrology represents your atma (soul), the spark of consciousness that animates you, your sense of purpose, and your relationship with authority and the father.
Vedic vs Western — The Ayanamsa Difference
Around 285 CE, the spring equinox aligned with 0° Aries in both systems. Since then, due to axial precession, they've drifted apart by approximately 24°. Vedic astrology continues to measure against the stars themselves (sidereal), while Western astrology fixes 0° Aries to the spring equinox (tropical). The result: most people get a different Sun Sign in Vedic calculation than they're used to from Western horoscopes.
For example, someone born on April 5th would be a Western Aries but a Vedic Pisces. Neither is wrong — they answer different astrological questions. For traditional Vedic predictions, dashas, and Indian horoscope work, the sidereal Sun Sign is the relevant one. To complete your basics, also find your Moon Sign and Ascendant — these three points form the foundation of any Vedic chart reading.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is my Vedic Sun Sign different from my Western Sun Sign?+
Most likely, yes. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed against the actual constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed against the spring equinox. Due to precession of the equinoxes, the two systems have drifted apart by approximately 24 degrees. So if you are a Western Aries (born March 21–April 19), your Vedic Sun Sign is most likely Pisces.
Which Sun Sign is correct?+
Both are 'correct' within their own framework. Western astrology answers questions about your psychological archetype within the seasonal cycle. Vedic astrology answers questions about your karmic blueprint relative to the actual stars. For Vedic readings, dashas, and traditional Indian horoscope work, the sidereal Sun Sign is what's used.
What does the Sun signify in Vedic astrology?+
The Sun (Surya) represents your soul (atma), ego, vitality, father, authority figures, government, and inner light. It signifies leadership, social status, recognition, and your sense of purpose. The house and sign of the Sun in your chart reveals where your soul seeks expression.
Why is the Moon Sign more emphasized in Indian astrology?+
Because the Moon changes signs every 2.5 days versus the Sun's monthly change, Moon-based readings are more individualized. The Vimshottari Dasha system — central to Vedic prediction — is keyed to the Moon's nakshatra. Daily horoscopes published in Indian newspapers, compatibility matching, and most prediction techniques use the Moon Sign as primary.
