What Is Your Janma Nakshatra?

The 27 Nakshatras are the lunar mansions of Vedic astrology — divisions of the zodiac based on the Moon's 27-day orbital cycle. Each Nakshatra is a 13°20' segment of the sky, ruled by a specific deity and a planetary lord. Your Janma Nakshatra is the constellation the Moon was in at your birth.

Your Nakshatra is more granular than your Moon Sign. While the Moon Sign tells the broad emotional canvas, your Nakshatra reveals the specific texture — your gana (temperament), yoni (instinctive nature), tara (cosmic strength), and the planet that initiates your Vimshottari Dasha sequence.

Why Pada Matters

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 Padas (quarters), each 3°20' wide. Your Pada determines the sign of your Moon in the D9 Navamsa chart — the most important divisional chart for marriage, dharma, and life direction. Two people with the same Nakshatra but different Padas can have very different life trajectories. The Nakshatra and Pada together also feed into Ashtakoot kundli matching for compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Nakshatra?+

A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions (or 'star groups') that the Moon passes through as it orbits the Earth. Each Nakshatra spans 13°20' of the zodiac. Your Janma Nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon was in at the moment of your birth — it shapes your personality, mental tendencies, and Mahadasha periods more deeply than your Moon Sign alone.

What is a Pada?+

Each Nakshatra is divided into 4 quarters called Padas. Each Pada spans 3°20' and corresponds to a Navamsa division. Your specific Pada within a Nakshatra adds nuance to your birth chart — it determines the Navamsa sign of your Moon and is used in finer dasha and matching calculations.

Why is my Nakshatra important?+

Your birth Nakshatra is the foundation of Vimshottari Dasha — the 120-year planetary period system used for timing predictions. It also determines your Tara compatibility for marriage matching, your Yoni and Gana classifications, your Naamkaran (naming) syllables, and many remedial measures.
