About Your Moon Sign

In Vedic astrology, your Moon Sign — known as Chandra Rashi — is calculated from the sidereal position of the Moon at your time of birth. It represents your emotional landscape, instinctive responses, the way you process feelings, and your relationship with your mother and home. Where the Sun signifies your soul's expression, the Moon signifies your mind.

When an Indian astrologer asks for your rashi, they almost always mean your Moon Sign — not your Sun Sign. Daily horoscopes published in Indian newspapers, Tarabal compatibility, Mahadasha analysis, and even your Nakshatra-based name (Naamkaran) all begin with the Moon's position at birth.

The 12 Moon Signs

The Moon traverses all 12 signs every 27 days, spending roughly 2.25 days in each. The 12 Vedic Moon Signs are: Mesha (Aries), Vrishabha (Taurus), Mithuna (Gemini), Karka (Cancer), Simha (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchika (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makara (Capricorn), Kumbha (Aquarius), and Meena (Pisces). Each sign is governed by a planetary lord and carries a distinct emotional temperament.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Moon Sign in Vedic astrology?+

Your Moon Sign (Rashi) is the zodiac sign the Moon was transiting at the moment of your birth. In Vedic astrology, the Moon Sign is considered far more important than the Sun Sign — it represents your emotional nature, instincts, and inner life. Most predictions in Indian astrology are based on the Moon Sign, not the Sun Sign.

Why is my Vedic Moon Sign different from my Western Moon Sign?+

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (Lahiri Ayanamsa), which is calculated against the actual position of stars. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed against the seasons. The two systems differ by approximately 24 degrees today, so your Vedic Moon Sign is often one zodiac sign earlier than your Western Moon Sign.

Why do I need exact birth time?+

The Moon moves through one zodiac sign in roughly 2.5 days, so the date alone is usually enough to identify your Moon Sign. However, if you were born close to a sign change (within a few hours), the exact time matters. Birth time also matters for finding your Nakshatra and Ascendant.

Do I need to know my place of birth?+

Yes. The Moon's position is calculated relative to your birth location's longitude and timezone. Even within India, accurate calculation requires the city — though variations within a state are usually small for the Moon Sign specifically.
