The Foundation of Your Kundli

Of the three core points in Vedic astrology — the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant — the Lagna is the most personal. The Sun and Moon are the same for everyone born around the same time, but the Lagna shifts every two hours, making it unique to your specific minute of birth. It is the frame upon which every other reading is built.

The Lagna sign becomes your 1st house — governing your body, vitality, self-image, and the path your life takes. From the 1st house, the other eleven houses are counted in order, assigning meaning to every area of life: wealth (2nd), siblings (3rd), home (4th), children (5th), and so on through the 12th house of liberation.

Lagna vs Other Chart Systems

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal ascendant — fixed against the actual stars. Western astrology uses the tropical ascendant, fixed against the spring equinox. The two differ by approximately 24 degrees in 2026, so your Vedic Lagna is often one zodiac sign earlier than your Western Rising Sign. Neither is "wrong" — they answer different questions. Vedic predictions, dasha periods, and matching require the sidereal Lagna.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Ascendant or Lagna?+

The Ascendant — Lagna in Sanskrit — is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your exact moment of birth. It changes roughly every 2 hours, making it the most personal and time-sensitive part of your chart. The Lagna determines the layout of all 12 houses in your kundli and is considered the foundation of your personality, body, and life trajectory.

Why is exact birth time so important for Lagna?+

Because the Ascendant changes every ~2 hours, even a 4-minute error in birth time can shift it to a different degree, and a 30-minute error can push it into a different sign entirely. If you're unsure of your birth time, classical astrologers use techniques like 'Lagna rectification' — working backward from major life events to refine the time.

Is the Ascendant the same as the Moon Sign?+

No. The Moon Sign is where the Moon was at your birth (changes every ~2.5 days). The Ascendant is what was rising on the eastern horizon (changes every ~2 hours). Both are read together — the Moon Sign for emotions and inner life, the Lagna for physical constitution, life path, and house placements.

Which is more important — Lagna or Rashi?+

Both are essential. The Lagna chart (Lagna kundli) is the primary chart used for life events, career, health, and personality. The Moon chart (Chandra kundli) is read as a parallel — predictions are often verified from both. For daily horoscopes, the Moon Sign is typically used. For full chart reading, the Lagna takes precedence.
