Grahan in 2027: The Complete Eclipse Calendar
Eclipses (grahan) are the most charged events of the Vedic calendar. In 2027 the skies bring five grahan events — two solar (surya grahan) and three lunar (chandra grahan) — and one of them, the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027, is the longest total eclipse visible from populated regions in decades. Here are the verified dates, what each means in Jyotish, and how to observe them correctly.
2027 Grahan Dates at a Glance
- February 6, 2027 — Surya Grahan (Annular): visible from Chile, Argentina and the Atlantic; not visible from India.
- February 20, 2027 — Chandra Grahan (Penumbral): falling in the night hours for Asia, likely visible from India, though penumbral eclipses are subtle to the eye.
- July 18, 2027 — Chandra Grahan (Penumbral): a shallow penumbral eclipse; minimal visible change, still counted in the panchang.
- August 2, 2027 — Surya Grahan (Total): the headline event. Totality crosses Morocco, Spain, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia — and the partial phases extend across South Asia, meaning India sees a partial eclipse.
- August 17, 2027 — Chandra Grahan (Penumbral): the year's final eclipse, again a subtle penumbral one.
Looking back, 2026's eclipses (March 3 total lunar, August 12 total solar, August 28 partial lunar) are already behind us — 2027 is where attention turns now.
Why Eclipses Matter in Vedic Astrology
Rahu and Ketu, the shadow planets, are literally the mathematics of eclipses: a grahan occurs when the Sun or Moon aligns with the lunar nodes. Classical texts treat eclipse periods as times of heightened energy — excellent for mantra japa, charity and inner work, and traditionally avoided for starting new ventures, weddings or major purchases.
Sutak: When It Applies
Sutak — the observance period before and during an eclipse — applies only when the eclipse is visible from your location. For India, the February 2027 eclipses do not trigger sutak (the solar eclipse is not visible here at all), while the August 2, 2027 partial solar eclipse does. Sutak is typically observed from roughly 12 hours before a solar eclipse (and 9 hours before a lunar eclipse) until the eclipse ends: avoid eating during the eclipse, temples may close, and pregnant women traditionally take extra care.
What to Do During Grahan
- Chant the mantra of the eclipse's ruling graha — Om Suryaya Namah during surya grahan, Om Chandraya Namah during chandra grahan — or the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
- Give charity after the eclipse ends: food, grains or donations to those in need.
- Take a bath after the eclipse concludes; traditionally, food prepared before it is set aside.
- Use the window for meditation — many practitioners find eclipse japa unusually powerful.
What the August 2027 Eclipse Means for Your Chart
An eclipse's effect on you depends on where the eclipse falls in your birth chart — which house, which sign, and which of your dasha lords it touches. A solar eclipse in your 7th house speaks to relationships; in the 10th, to career shifts. This is why general lists can only take you so far.
